Terry nappies are probably one of the oldest ways of nappying or diapering a baby that is known in history. Even though there are variants of the wrapped nappy or diaper, the terry nappy has come to be the simplest form of wrapped nappy that exists today. It’s not hard to come by a nice white stack of terry nappies – many department stores and even supermarkets these days stock them in big packs – and the nice thing is that they last so long. You won’t need to replace them for a long time – probably you’ll only need to replace them if you have more than two children!
Most parents get two children through nappies with the one set of terry nappies, making them a very economical option. Add up how much money disposables cost you every fortnight and you will be shocked. The cost of a set of terry nappies will probably only cost you a fortnight or two’s worth of throwaway nappies. I know, it’s crazy, isn’t it! But those disposable companies want you to keep buying their stuff! We don’t have to hand over our hard-earned money to them just for disposable products for our little baby.
Terries are also better than disposables in that they are much, much better for baby’s skin. Babies have the most sensitive skin of all ages, and yet we are so often willing to put them into disposable nappies with all of the chemicals that are inside them. Not only the chemicals, some of which are known carcinogens, but they are also non-breathable meaning that baby’s skin can’t breathe. That’s a big contributing factor to nappy rash, which is very painful for babies.
Another reason for using terry nappies is that they are easier on the environment, because you only buy one set and use them for a long time, and in the end they can be composted because they are made of all natural fibres.
