Constipation is a condition where there is a decrease in stool frequency or in the difficulty in passing and elimination or formation of a stool. Here are some causes and constipation symptoms and what you can do about it.
Passing a regular stool, for most people, typically occurs from three times a day to once every three days. Frequency depends on lifestyle, daily activity and diet. If the frequency of a bowl movement occurs longer than once every three days or if it is hard and difficult to pass, these are signs of having constipation.
Constipation can occur for several reasons. One is that not enough fiber is being consumed per day. Medical associations recommend that 20 to 35 grams of fiber should be consumed per day. Fiber rich foods include wheat bran, whole grains, dried fruits and vegetables. Not drinking enough liquids is also a cause of constipation. Drinking at least four 8-oz. glasses of water per day is recommended to keep stools looser and more frequent.
Medicine that is has been taken can also be a cause. Some prescription medication that commonly causes constipation are analgesics (common prescription pain killers), antacids and anti-depressants. Taking beta-blockers, iron and calcium supplements can also cause this as well. In addition, if there is a history of abusing diarrheic and laxatives can lead to constipation. This is be over time the nerve endings in the colon can become damage, over time, interfering the its ability to contract. Traveling, pregnancy and other lifestyle changes can also be a cause of constipation.
Treatment for constipation is fairly easy and unless it is prolonged or symptoms are severe, a doctor’s visit may not be worth it. Altering diet and other lifestyle choices will help in clearing it up. Taking a mild laxative should also help the problem. While constipation is not a serious health problem, it could be a symptom of something that is. Therefore if you make changes and still have an issue or symptoms become worse, always see your doctor.
