- Have a Purpose – Write a blog post with a purpose in mind, not just because. Every article on your blog should have a purpose. Is it to increase readership? To get visitors to sign up for a newsletter? To promote a product? Know your purpose before you begin and this will help you create the tone and direction of your article.
- Have a Point - Know the point of every article and try to stay on point with a beginning, middle and end. If you find yourself straying off in another direction, stop and save that section for another article.
- Know Your Audience - It’s best to define your audience while in the planning stages of your website, but it is also a good idea to keep this in mind when writing as well. Are they male or female? What are their likes or dislikes? Where do they live? What do they do for a living? The more you know about your potential visitors the better you are able to relate your blog posts to them.
- Be Honest – It’s easier to write from your own perspective and experiences because it helps people relate. Don’t try to convince people to purchase a product or try out a service if you haven’t used it yourself. You will may get a few sales, but you will loose credibility in the long run.
- Use Sub Headings and Bullet Points - Subheadings and bulleted points help break up large sections of text and allows readers to scan your article for easier reading. Readability is important on the internet since you only have a few seconds to grab a new visitors attention. Even if people are interested in your article topic, if it’s hard to read, they will go to another website to find the same information.
- Use Pictures and Video – Adding multimedia to your blog article helps illustrate your point. Have your every heard the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Well it’s true. Pictures and video help your visitors visualize your point. So be sure to add multimedia that directly relates to your article topic.
