Rare American Coins: Two Coins of Influential History

One of the most popular collection items for antique and historical item collectors are coins, more specifically rare American coins for American history buffs. What is interesting is that the coin collection market is thriving so much that there are specific well known coins that collectors are desperately trying to get their hands on.

St. Gaudens Double Eagle
The St. Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the very rare American gold coins that many are in search of. The history behind this coin is part of the reason why so many seek after it. Near the turn of the 20th century President Theodore Roosevelt decided that he wanted to have a line of more beautiful coins during his run as president. He hired St. Gaudens to overlook the process of the designs of this coin. The first set of coins were too big, and the mint had trouble releasing them. There are still two of these left though, on display in the mint. However, there are some in circulation because the later design was smaller and were released although they still had trouble with them because the striking process and the soft gold left them hard to stack. It is a beautiful coin though and St. Gaudens did a great job. On one side of the coin is Lady Liberty, holding a torch while rays come out from behind her. On the other side is boldly and majestically flying eagle like never seen before on a coin. It is easy to see why this is so eagerly wanted and why it is a rare American coin.

Walking Liberty Half Dollar
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is another coin that was issued by order of Roosevelt. This is also an American rare coin, and is equal to the beauty of the Double Eagles coin. On this coin Lady Liberty looks even more majestic with her robes flowing as if in an Italian Renaissance painting. This time the sun is not behind her but she is looking towards it in the distance. On the other side is an eagle that has landed on a branch with its wings spread outward.

The allure of collecting football rookie cards

When it comes to card collecting it is hard to not think back to yesteryear and the simpler times when you went down to the drug store and picked up a pack of football cards to pass the time.  In these packs would be a piece of gum that was ok at best at one time, but now likely tastes like chalk and rocks combined.  None the less we collected these cards to get a feel for what our favorite players had to offer.  So what makes a football rookie card so much better than the remainder of the cards by that player?

It likely stems back to a little bit of human nature in addition to a pretty basic economics.  Let’s delve into the human nature aspect first.  It seems that as humans we always want to be at the forefront of just about everything.  If for no other reason than to tell our friends and acquaintances that we were there first and have the proof in our hot little hands.  This is a key aspect to why collecting those rookie cards has always been such a focus on the past years of card collecting.

Perhaps more importantly is the economics of card collecting.  Simply stated, low supply and high demand makes for a more expensive item.  This is the case with the football auto cards that the high end card companies came out with in the not too distant past.  Simply put, the autographed cards are by design produced in low supply and thus they are harder to get in turn raising prices.  In the past the high profile players were produced in great volumes and the new comers were not made as many as well as people not taking care to keep them due to the relative newness of the player on the scene.  And in the days before Ebay and the internet, localized supply and demand played a major role in the price of cards.  Given the world wide web this localized notion went out the window and the over production by card companies in the 80’s and especially 90’s has led to low priced cards.

How to Make RC Airplanes and Helicopters Radio Controlled

We all have gone through the wonders of being a young and playful child. Back then, we dreamt of a lot of things and had a lot of ideas running in our minds. We wished that we had lamps to rub on and that genies would come out to grant our wishes. Among such wishes would be getting the ability to fly. Saying to ourselves how great it would be to wake up one morning with wings attached on our backs. We also dreamt of being in the air force and getting the chance to wear cool helmets while hovering aboard a helicopter or getting the chance to fly our own planes. Continue reading

Digging in Rock Formations of Western Kansas

The Kansas wind blew constantly, and frequently blew chalk dust into my eyes while I hunched on the ground looking at the chocolate-brown bones exposed at the surface. The bones were first spotted by the young boy whose family farms this particular section of land. While taking a break from his chores the boy explored the badland exposures along the river, and spotted these fragile bones. Continue reading
