A brief history of the gents watch

It’s pretty much taken for granted that, assuming the brand is right, the modern gents watch is considered a highly prestigious item. But this was not always the case. At the turn of the 20th century the first wristwatches were frowned upon by men who preferred pocket watches, kept in their breast pocket and held in place by a chain which became the handle the gentleman could use to retrieve the watch from his pocket. In this era wristwatches were very much considered as a ladies accessory.

Unfortunately the tragedy of the First World War was responsible for changing this attitude. During the war soldiers needed to be able to see the time and still have both hands available to hold a gun or use any heavy artillery they might be operating. As such the pocket watch made the transition from the pocket onto the wrist. The watch bands of the carrier where simple leather straps, it was not until after the war when the idea and usefulness of a wrist watch gained traction in the wider populace that the watch face, mechanism and strap were integrated as a single unit.

The technology inside the watch remained fairly constant until the 1950s when for the first time battery powered watches were produced. More developments were to follow particularly in relation to the watch’s face. Light emitting diodes provided digital displays but because of their power requirements and the equivalent lack of power in batteries of the time the wearer had to press a button to see the time. This changed in the late 70s and early 80s when liquid crystal displays were introduced which used much less power and allowed the time to be visible constantly. Battery power is no longer a concern for the modern wristwatch however there is a return to mechanical watches, at least at the top end of the market.
