Popular Misconceptions about Security Guards

There are a variety of popular misconceptions about security guards that come from TV, movies and general observations. But how much do you really know about the job of being a security guard? How many security guards have you actually talked to about their jobs and what they do for a living? Chances are, you have never interacted with a security guard aside from seeing them at their stations from time to time. Many people thing that being a security guard is an easy job since it doesn’t seem like they have to much aside from patrolling their areas. But that can’t be further than the truth since the job requires a reasonable amount of skill to perform.

Most security companies require their employees to be licensed and registered before they can begin working. Many people think that security guards are just people with strong bodies with no other qualifications. But the fact is, security guards need a variety of specialized skills to do their jobs. Whether armed or unarmed, security guards have to be familiar with techniques on how to respond to certain situations. You would also be incorrect to assume security guards focus on brute force, since a major requirement of the job is negotiating. Good security guards have high people skills that they use to handle any number of situations that may arise when dealing with the public.

The next time you see a security guard, don’t just think you’re seeing a person who enjoys the power of being able to boss people around, or to hold court over a certain area. Many security guards enjoy their jobs and they do them the best they can while maintaining healthy relationships with the public. They have come from successful guard training and may be more skilled than you think. As long as you aren’t a criminal yourself, you should have nothing to worry about and your local security guard will probably have every reason to be friendly to you. It’s easy to take them for granted and mislabel them as something they’re not, but the fact is security guards are essential and appreciate being seen as the hard workers they are.

Train for a Rewarding Career as a Joiner

Many options exist for becoming a joiner. In many countries including the United States, the job is part of carpentry and is usually discussed in this occupational context. Joiners use hand and power tools for new construction and for repair and maintenance of existing structures. They use wood and other materials to work on roofs, floors, window and door frames, bath and kitchen counter tops and cabinets, and stairs. In some cases, employees may work on larger commercial construction projects, bridges, or roads. A person can become a joiner in a number of informal and formal ways. All methods include tool usage, blueprint reading, and safe work habits.

An individual can learn carpentry and joinery jobs while employed by a building contractor commonly referred to as on-the-job training. There is no structure of formal classes and new employees learn from their supervisors or co-workers. Employers recommend that a person applying for a job without formal training have a background in using hand and power tools. When new on a job, the person may be referred to as a carpenter’s helper.

Many public vocational-technical schools offer carpentry programs that are about 600 hours and include both classroom instruction and activities in a carpentry lab or workshop. These programs offer the students instruction in basic carpentry tasks, safe working practices, use of hand and power tools, and materials and supplies. Participants focus on floors, roofs, walls, doors, windows, and stairs. In many cases, a wood structure is built by the students to put into practice what they learned from the textbooks and skilled practice in the lab.

The most skilled joiners and carpenters have completed a registered apprenticeship program that is usually four years long. These programs follow standards that are locally established by an apprenticeship committee composed of local contractors who employ carpenters in diverse construction projects. Approved or certified instructors follow a standard curriculum to assure a high-skilled workforce for the industry. Apprenticeship programs have wage requirements that increase the earning potential of journeymen who complete the program

Becoming a joiner is a rewarding goal that can be accomplished through informal or formal education leading to high-paying jobs. If you would like to learn more about joinery jobs, one resource available is joineryjobs.net. Good luck!
