There are a variety of popular misconceptions about security guards that come from TV, movies and general observations. But how much do you really know about the job of being a security guard? How many security guards have you actually talked to about their jobs and what they do for a living? Chances are, you have never interacted with a security guard aside from seeing them at their stations from time to time. Many people thing that being a security guard is an easy job since it doesn’t seem like they have to much aside from patrolling their areas. But that can’t be further than the truth since the job requires a reasonable amount of skill to perform.

Most security companies require their employees to be licensed and registered before they can begin working. Many people think that security guards are just people with strong bodies with no other qualifications. But the fact is, security guards need a variety of specialized skills to do their jobs. Whether armed or unarmed, security guards have to be familiar with techniques on how to respond to certain situations. You would also be incorrect to assume security guards focus on brute force, since a major requirement of the job is negotiating. Good security guards have high people skills that they use to handle any number of situations that may arise when dealing with the public.

The next time you see a security guard, don’t just think you’re seeing a person who enjoys the power of being able to boss people around, or to hold court over a certain area. Many security guards enjoy their jobs and they do them the best they can while maintaining healthy relationships with the public. They have come from successful guard training and may be more skilled than you think. As long as you aren’t a criminal yourself, you should have nothing to worry about and your local security guard will probably have every reason to be friendly to you. It’s easy to take them for granted and mislabel them as something they’re not, but the fact is security guards are essential and appreciate being seen as the hard workers they are.
