Free Laptop Programs: Are They Legitimate?

You have probably seen these free laptop schemes online or in print advertisements and wondered how this can be making them any money. This article gives a behind the scenes look at what these schemes involve and things to watch out for if you do decide to consider using them.

Many would wonder if these schemes are simply a scam. There probably are a number of scams, as in any of these type of programs, so always be sure to research the company before committing to anything.

However, the bulk of these companies are making money online from lead generation. You might get a free laptop but in return you have to provide a lot of personal information that you agree to being passed on (or sold on) to third parties for sales leads or market research.

The first thing to be careful of is the volume of data you are expected to provide. This can include health history and financial which many would be reticent about passing about.

Secondly, your information could potentially go onto hundreds of other firms meaning you may end up on numerous mailing lists and direct marketing campaigns.

Third, these programs often require you to sign up to associate programs before you receive the free laptop. Check which programs you would be expected to join, what they cost and for how long you need to subscribe. They may even have early drop-out charges if you leave their schemes before a set period.

Finally, many of these schemes use refurbished computers (reformatting or fixing computers that are nearly new) but this is only detailed in the small print.

Perhaps there is no such thing as a free laptop. To make the most from these schemes, just be patient and read the terms and conditions fully to understand what you are letting yourself in for.

PC Service – How To Service Your Own PC

Being able to do your own PC service from home is an essential maintenance activity and the ideal way of preventing issues further on down the road. This article looks at some of the principal actions to complete on a scheduled basis.

Prior to doing any form of computer repair and maintenance it is always best practice to make a back-up copy of any sensitive data on your computer which you could not do without.

Get all the latest Microsoft updates from the Updates service. This will install the latest drivers and security patches for your computer. Additionally, get the latest virus definitions for your anti-virus software. Both of these updates can be set to run automatically, rather than manually invoked.

Run a full virus check of all drives, external storage devices and even memory sticks. USB memory drives are particularly prone to getting a virus due to the nature of them being shared between PCs.

Use the Windows Disk Defragmentation tool to defragment your hard drives. An overly fragmented drive slows down regular performance as the operating system strains to complete more disk access commands and cached more data fragments in memory.

Repair any registry issues by running a registry cleaner application (there are numerous ones to choose from). This is especially necessary if several applications have been installed/removed over a maintenance period.

Run the Windows Check Disk application to scan for disk drive faults. If these do start occurring then it is good to have an early warning of problems (allowing you time to back up the full drive).

Free up some disk space during a PC service by removing temporary internet files and any cached data (tools like CCleaner can do this for you in one click – and are free to use). Remove unused applications (especially bulky ones that have large help files).

What To Keep In Mind When Buying A Computer Mouse

I came across a definition for what a mouse is that went something like this ‘A peripheral for your computer that can be held in either hand and is used to induce changes on the screen’. What this means at its core is, you move the mouse to move stuff on screen. Definitions of what a mouse does is of no interest to you though, you are more interested in how you are going to replace one, and with what model. Continue reading

Your Pink Notebook Guide

Pink notebooks have captured a particular segment in the market, particularly young women that are well-versed in fashion trends.  They, as much as possible, tend to make everything conform to their favorite color, including laptop computers.  Nearly every reputable brand has released models of pink notebooks on the market, most of which look stunning and have impressive specs.

The Pink Performance

Don’t be fooled by the appearance of pink laptops.  Most of these gadgets are stellar performers.  The latest models are nearly as powerful as desktop computers. They also possess sleek contours, making them seem like high tech fashion accessories.  If you’re looking for power, you can rely on the notebooks built by popular brands. They may be expensive, but they won’t let you down in terms of quality.

Huge Storage Space

Pink notebooks, like regular laptops, have large storage spaces, enough to fit a multitude of downloaded/purchased goodies, such as videos, music and online games.  You’ll have fun storing a lot of interesting programs found on the internet and computer software stores.  In addition, if you run out of storage space, you can always hook up an external hard drive to your laptop.

Quick Processing Speed

Any laptop computer that cannot process commands quickly is unsatisfactory.  It can hamper your performance at work and your fun time on the internet.  Fortunately, most of the pink notebooks on the market have quick processing speeds.  You won’t encounter hitches when you use several applications, all at once.  A slowdown will only occur if you run dozens of heavy applications, simultaneously, or if the storage space is about to be filled up.  In this case, you can add more ram to your laptop.  It will up the processing speed to desirable levels.

As Dainty as a Trinket…

Pink notebooks are both fashionable and efficient.  Technology has finally found a way to bridge the erstwhile gap between high technological performance and high fashion.

Check out the great pink notebooks review today for some awesome advice and tips.

The Key To A Faster PC

Getting a faster PC involves upgrading the hardware or reducing the strain on the system by the running software. This article highlights the main changes that can make a PC run faster.

Upgrading hardware doesn’t resolve the reasons why a slow PC is under-performing. However as web applications become more power hungry it is increasingly necessary to have a high specification machine.

  • Add more RAM: This is one of the best ways to gain faster PC speed. The RAM is ‘short term memory’ for the PC so the more you have, the easier it can process commands.
  • Upgrade the video card on desktop PCs: The better the card, the less processing that needs to be done by the CPU.
  • Use external drives: This frees up space for the Windows paging file which the OS uses as virtual RAM memory.

The other side of the coin is reducing the strain put on the CPU and RAM by software. The following actions reduce this strain and speed up PC processing, disk access and RAM usage.

  • Update all device drivers: This can normally be done via Windows Update.
  • Defragment the hard drives: You can use the Windows tool for doing this (or the free Auslogic Disk Defrag application). A less fragmented drive requires fewer disk access calls and less caching demands.
  • Free up some disk space: If your drive is over 90% full then computer freezes will become increasingly common. Clear out unused software and/or use free tools like CCleaner to clear out cached/temporary files.
  • Registry tuning: A current trend for faster PC processing times is to optimize key settings in the registry. This configuration file can introduce non-optimum settings as applications are installed, removed and configured that mean the hardware/software don’t run to their best ability. Tools like Reimage or Registry Easy make a PC run faster but, just like tuning cars, the gains are dependent on the hardware.
  • Check for viruses: Some viruses (e.g. trojans) can sit on a PC hogging processing power and internet bandwidth. Scan for bugs and remove any that are found.
