A dome camera is likely one of the easiest kinds of security cameras to imitate effectively. Unlike a regular camera, which has brackets and swivels and other external parts, dome cameras have only a visible dome, and usually a little red light. This means that even the cheapest fake dome cameras you can buy look very real to most people.
The fact that they look very real and are very inexpensive are two good reasons to get one, but there are a few things to consider before you do. The first thing that you may want to consider is that there are very few places to install them in your average home that look natural. Most people are used to seeing them in retail stores, malls, and other more industrial or commercial settings, as opposed to in and around residential properties.
Another thing to consider is that they are kind of hard to see sometimes. Dome cameras were actually built originally to not be seen, so that they can catch people in the act of stealing or trespassing or whatever it is they are doing wrong. Since fake dome cameras do not record, they are not going to catch anyone doing anything.
I think that the best place to install one of these is on an overhang near one of the entrances to your home (front or back door). Test it to make sure that the LED can be seen by approaching visitors. That way, anyone who comes to your front door will see it, and be duly warned. This can actually have a stronger deterrent effect than many other styles of cameras.
Finally, I do not suggest that a fake dome camera be your sole option for home security. You will probably want to get another type of security camera as well, or at least a different style of fake security camera. Either way, home security is something that should be taken very seriously, so check out all of your options and come up with a complete solution that will work for you and within your budget.
