It is truly a shame that people cannot just try their best to get along. The world would certainly be a better place if every one could suddenly agree to be nice to each other. Unfortunately, from the time we are young, we have to put up with, and learn how to deal with bullies no matter how old we are.
The typical bully profile does not change much from the school yard to the work place. The form of abuse may change a bit, but bullies still typically find their warped enjoyment from sniffing out the person who they perceive to be the weakest in their environment. They then go on to dish out the abuse and take their demented joy from watching that person suffer.
If you are in the position of being bullied at work, you have got to find the strength within yourself to deal with the difficult situation. It may not be a comforting thought, but consider the alternative of spending years suffering the daily abuse that these people are more than will to hand out. Sometimes, the bullying can be stopped simply by letting the bully know that you do not like their approach. If they are testing your confidence levels, this may surprise them and get them to move along without bothering you further.
If the bullying continues or increases, try telling the person straight up that you do not like the behavior (be specific about what they are doing). Let them know that it will not be accepted. Be sure to keep track of any bullying behavior as it occurs. If there are witnesses, get them to document the incident as well.
In the case that confronting a workplace bully does not stop the behavior, consult the proper authorities, in your workplace (with documentation). Fear of a lawsuit, if nothing else, may get them to intercede for you. You may have to get in touch with the proper legal authorities if this does not resolve the situation.
Dealing with bullies is not ever a pleasant thing. If possible, avoiding situations that promote conflict is usually wise. When that is not possible however, you must take the necessary steps to end the abuse. You have a right to a safe working environment, and no one deserves the nonsense that bullies hand out.
